A Group of Six British Citizens Sentenced to Prison for One Million Pound Fire Attack on Storage Facility Containing Aid for Ukraine

A group of six individuals from Britain working on behalf of the Wagner mercenary group linked to Russia have been handed jail terms for setting fire to a located in London storage unit that was storing relief supplies destined for Ukraine.

Court Rulings and Involvement

Sentencing the men, the judge at the central criminal court remarked that they had planned a “series of terrorist and sabotage acts” to benefit the Russian state.

The individual named Dylan Earl was given a seventeen-year prison sentence with an additional six years on extended licence due to his “leading role”. Another defendant, Jake Reeves, from Croydon in south London, was sentenced to 12 years in jail with an additional year on extended licence. Their admitted crimes made them the first individuals to be found guilty under the National Security Act 2023.

Jakeem Rose, aged 23, also from Croydon, was sentenced to a term of eight years and ten months. Nii Mensah, 23, from Thornton Heath, south London, was sentenced to nine years and Ugnius Asmena, who was without a fixed address, was handed seven years in prison. The trio were each found guilty of aggravated arson and given a additional year on extended licence by the judge.

Ashton Evans drug dealer from Newport in Gwent, was sentenced to nine years plus a further year on extended licence after being convicted of failing to disclose details regarding acts of terrorism connected to another plot in the Mayfair area.

Incident Specifics

The deliberate fire on a warehouse in Leyton, east London put 60 firefighters at risk and resulted in one million pounds worth of destruction in March last year.

The court heard that the 21-year-old Earl and the 24-year-old Reeves remained in their residences while coordinating the incident for the Wagner mercenary organization, acting on behalf of the Russian government.

The group targeted the warehouse because it was being utilized for providing emergency relief and StarLink satellite equipment to Ukraine.

When the same Ukrainian company was hit by an intentional fire ten days afterward in Madrid, investigators from the Metropolitan Police's anti-terror unit assumed control of the investigation.

Proof and Additional Schemes

When Earl was taken into custody, law enforcement examination of his cellphone revealed he had videos of the storage facility blaze being started and was in contact with the Wagner organization on the Telegram messaging app, via an account with the handles ‘Privet Bot’ and ‘Lucky Strike alias’.

Some of the messages showed that reconnaissance for further “missions”, involving arson attacks at a restaurant and wine store in Mayfair district owned by the Russian opposition figure Evgeny Chichvarkin had already taken place. The use of explosives to harm structures was also deliberated.

Investigators discovered that Earl was also raising the possibility of kidnapping the dissident Chichvarkin and “exiling him back to Russia to confront imprisonment”.

The drug dealer from Elmesthorpe, Leicestershire had talked about another potential attack in the Czech Republic.

In a residence inspection, police located a flag of Russia, more than £20,000 in cash and cocaine hydrochloride with a market value of about £34,000.

Motivations and Judicial Remarks

The proceedings revealed he was a participant in multiple channels promoting Russian propaganda and was driven by “plain and severe avarice”.

“This case is about the attempts by the Russian government to acquire harmful worldwide sway using social media to enlist saboteurs far from the Russian capital.”

She determined the arson attack had a “terrorist connection” irrespective of if the individuals responsible were aware of it. The Wagner organization is proscribed by the UK government as a terrorist group.
