The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
