We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
